MOONEY BRANCH is made up of two types of property. The parcels on the North Road (A to V) are characterized by tall oaks, soaring pines and high ground surrounded by the Mark Twain National Forest. The parcels on the South Road (W to AL) on the other hand, each have a steep wooded slope on either their north or south side and lots of level bottom-land from the road back to the slope. This bottom-land has something you don't see very often in Southern Missouri: sandy loam. It's covered with native grasses, junipers, pines and prickly pear now, but if you ever wanted to put in a garden this would be the place. Parcels AD to AL are crossed by Mooney Branch, an intermittent stream that is dry most of the time. The Big Piney River is about 3 miles to the west, Rolla, Mo. is 35 miles north, and groceries are 10 miles to the east in Licking, Mo. which is one very rapidly growing little town. If you like trout fishing, Montauk State Park is 12 miles further east. If you like marching, Fort Leonard Wood is a short hop to the west.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS: From Licking in Northern Texas County, Mo. follow Hwy. 32 west to Hwy. N, which turns right, and take this to its end where you turn right a again on Texas Tower Road for 8/10ths of a mile where, at the foot of a longish hill, you'll see the south road taking off due east. The north road begins at the top of the next hill.
