Laclede
County
Laclede County was organized
February 24, 1849, and named in honor of the founder of St. Louis, Pierre
Liguest Laclede. A short-lived search to determine the reason for this
designation came up empty, so we will just let you make up your own story.
The county was settled mostly by emigrants from Tennessee, and the city of
Lebanon was named after a town from whence many of those settlers came.
Laclede county covers 770 square miles, with a population of 32,513 (2000
census), making a population density of 42 people per square mile.
Missouri has many springs, and
one of the biggest is located on the border of Laclede and Dallas Counties.
With a daily flow of over 100,000,000 gallons, Bennett Spring is Missouri’s
fourth largest spring. Bennett Spring State Park is 3,216-acres worth of
camping, swimming, hiking, and fishing.
