Laclede County

Laclede County was organized February 24, 1849, and named in honor of the founder of St. Louis, Pierre Liguest Laclede. A short-lived search to determine the reason for this designation came up empty, so we will just let you make up your own story. The county was settled mostly by emigrants from Tennessee, and the city of Lebanon was named after a town from whence many of those settlers came.  Laclede county covers 770 square miles, with a population of 32,513 (2000 census), making a population density of 42 people per square mile.

Missouri has many springs, and one of the biggest is located on the border of Laclede and Dallas Counties.  With a daily flow of over 100,000,000 gallons, Bennett Spring is Missouri’s fourth largest spring.  Bennett Spring State Park is 3,216-acres worth of camping, swimming, hiking, and fishing.

Some towns in Laclede County are:

Lebanon (County Seat) 2000 population: 12,155

Lebanon is large enough to have a hospital, a number of fast food restaurants, Walmart, and Walgreens, and small enough to find peace and quiet within 5 minutes of driving outside of the city limits.  Many banks, churches, a county library call Lebanon home, and the I-44 Speedway draws a crowd on race nights.

Richland  2000 population:  1,805

Richland is actually located in part of Laclede County, as well as the counties of Camden and Pulaski.  Richland can give you just about anything you need: auto repair, legal advice, insurance, florist, clothing or building supplies and hardware.  Restaurants, banks, and a home-owned motel also grace the streets of Richland.  A weekly newspaper will keep you current on the goings on in Richland, as well as the many activities of the local school, of which the town is very proud to support.

Falcon  2000 population: 882

If all you want is a place to buy a stamp and a gallon of milk, Falcon is the town for you.  An unincorporated community in eastern Laclede County; it has a store, a post office, and an elementary/middle school.
